8 steps to survive a mass shooting

02/07/2018

Mass shootings are now becoming more common today. You may hear it in the news a lot of times, particularly in the United States. A reason it may be happening is the lack of action from legislators, which results in why weapons are still in the hands of those who shouldn't even be owning them.

There is no more time for thinking of what your next one will be. The only thing one can do is to be smart when you are already in the area where the attacker is on a killing spree.

Your main priority here is to escape, running as fast as you can and without any other goal but to reach the nearest exit. Make sure that you are not to be seen or you could be the shooter's next target.

Try to dock and look for objects which will be able to shield you. Do NOT freeze or feel afraid that you just hide in one area. Based on mass shooting survivors, people who decide to just hide in one area that the attacker has penetrated did NOT help at all.

Many times, these attackers would carry very powerful weapons and would mercilessly shoot anyone and anything. That's why the key to survival is to run as far as you can. Do not bother to bargain with the attacker.

When you have now found an emergency exit, do NOT stop running. The only time you should stop is once you have found a safe zone, or you find yourself in an area where you find authorities leading people to safety.

Make sure that you also help other people around you, as they might have frozen up from fear or are physically incapable to move. Saving people is your next priority, so move people out and escape together.

Do NOT dare attack the shooter if you don't have any weapons with you. However, if you do have a close encounter with the attacker, there is no other choice but to fight head on.

Grab whatever sharp or heavy weapon you can find and distract the attacker. Go all out here and do not show any compassion until the weapon is out of his hands or you have pinned him down. This is your last resort if you have no other options.

It would also help if you can find a cover like thick trees and support beams. BUT, take note that these are just temporary shields to use while the attacker aimlessly shoots the area. You still have to make sure to continue moving away from the attacker and into a safer area when the coast is clear.

It is a traumatic experience to be in a mass shooting, but the goal is to survive and learn new helpful skills in order to begin your journey to self-improvement.
